Profile
In 1988, Porntip (Bui) Nakhirunkanok, representing her native country, Thailand, was crowned Miss Universe. From that date, she has gone on to address the United Nations, as Thailand's Goodwill Ambassador, where she spoke on behalf of the Rights of the Child bill. Having earned her baccalaureate degree from Pepperdine University, Bui continues reaching out to young people by promoting education and self-esteem in students internationally. In 1988, Bui established her own children's fund, responsible for benefiting the lives of her country's underprivileged youth. In 1995, Bui organized and starred in a ten-city concert tour to raise funds for the children of Thailand. Her philanthropic work has built schools, fed undernourished children and provided housing for the needy. In recognition of Bui's various contributions and accomplishments, she was presented with a Royal Medal of Honor from the King of Thailand. This remains her most treasured memory.
In June of 1991, Bui participated in the Asian American Festivities at the White House, hosted by then President George Bush. And in November of 1997, Bui became an active board member of City Hearts - a privately funded youth organization designed to help Los Angeles inner city kids.
