Profile
Lupita Jones Garay was born in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. She studied business administration and, as a postgraduate student, Industrial Administration at Centro de Ensenanza Tecnica y Superior in Mexicali, Baja California.
In May, 1991 she was crowned Miss Universe in Las Vegas, Nevada, becoming the first woman from Mexico to win the Miss Universe title.
Having an interest in the business and promotion of pageants, Lupita created the Company Promocertamen in 1994. Her company organized the annual pageant, Nuestra Belleza Mexico, and promotes the modern Mexican woman around the world. In 1994 Lupita's company was given the Miss Universe Organization license for the contest in Mexico; in 1995 it was granted the Miss World Beauty Contest license and in 1999 the Miss International license.
In 1999, Lupita convinced Nuestra Belleza Mexico to support an important program for ill-treated girls in Mexico City through the Integral Family Development project.
Priorities
Lupita is particularly interested in assisting women who have been left behind, sometimes forgotten, by husbands who have migrated to other countries looking for better jobs and economic opportunity,women and their children who are now on their own and often without the means to afford medical and educational services.
