Miss Ahlstrom's documentary Joan examines the daily life of a middle class teenage girl from Zambia. Joan, the young adolescent, speaks at length about sex, AIDS and pregnancy. She talks about her school and educational experiences, and what she wants to do in the future. She discusses money, politics, drugs and alcohol, as well as death and dying.

It is easy for Swedish and other Western teens to relate to Joan's feelings, even though they live thousands of miles apart and in very different cultures, and to realize that she deserves the same basic human rights and opportunities as they have.
