Women on the Edge of the Millennium
10 Stories of Personal Triumph
Produced by Mikko Kuustonen and his Medicine Man Productions company
This series of ten 15-minute episodes features 10 women living in developing countries. Each is a powerful story of personal triumph over conditions shocking to most of those living in developed countries. The episodes portray each woman's response to a life-threatening challenge such as genital mutilation, domestic violence, natural disasters, child prostitution and drug addiction. Each episode documents the conditions, the intervention of governmental and NGO support groups, and, most importantly, the actions taken by these everyday heroines to overcome adversity and control their destiny.
Finnish singer/songwriter Mikko Kuustonen and his film crew traveled to El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Thailand, Bangladesh, India and Cambodia and interviewed 30 women to create this documentary. "Women on the Edge of the Millennium" aired on Finland's Channel Four. Mikko shows that, in spite of extreme deprivation and suffering, these women find positive things in their lives, which give them "if not hope, then something close to it."
