Series: "Family Planning in Peru, 1999" / Serie: "Planificación familiar en Perú, 1999"
The Peruvian government started a family planning programme in 1995 for a period of five years. This programme, initially designed to reduce poverty, became a programme of massive forced sterilisations. Officially, it is estimated that during the first four years, 250,000 women were sterilised. According to the Portuguese TV channel SIC, this figure is in reality up to 1 million.
En 1995, el gobierno peruano empezó un "programa de planificación familiar" que terminará en el 2000. En realidad, este programa pensado para disminuir la pobreza en el país, se convirtió en un programa de esterilizaciones masivas. Oficialmente, se calcula que en los primeros cuatro años del programa se esterilizó forzadamente a 250.000 mujeres,
pero según el informe de la cadena de televisión portuguesa SIC, esta cifra asciende a 1 millón.
