Face to Face Campaign Progress Report #2
The Face to Face Public Testimonies
Three rounds of testimonies from people on the front line in the field of reproductive health were held at the various UN Cairo +5 forums. Refugee camps, AIDS, FGM, safe motherhood and other issues were addressed and recorded.
Joke Van Kampen of WPF will now gather the Face to Face testimonies in an educational commemorative book. Juxtaposed with the testimonies will be examples of field programs supported by UNFPA and Face to Face Campaign partners, as well as background information on the state of population and development in each developing world country represented. Produced in English, French, Spanish, German and Dutch, the Face to Face Campaign will distribute the book worldwide to NGOs, schools, libraries and other appropriate venues.

After doing so, Bertrand used a large portion of the million- dollar prize money to create a humanitarian foundation, the Winds of Hope, to promote respect for man and nature. Two Face to Face TV Documentaries in Development
BIRTH OF A MOTHER: Belgian Television Drama
"Birth of a Mother" tells the universal story of two women becoming mothers. It begins with the time each woman consciously decided to become a mother and ends when each child is a few weeks old. "Birth of a Mother" explores the effects of where one lives in the world and the degree of security that place provides for mother and child. This television drama reveals the attitudes, facts and emotions that underscore the science and drama of this most vital process on earth - giving life.
"Birth of a Mother" was conceived by Goedele Liekens, UN Population Fund Goodwill Ambassador and Face to Face Campaign Spokesperson for Belgium. Goedele is a well-known television-presenter in Belgium. Her recent experience with pregnancy and childbirth make her a natural for the role of one of the two women featured in this television drama. The other woman, yet to be chosen, will share some things in common with Goedele, but she lives and works in a developing country.
There is a third, anonymous woman in "Birth of a Mother." Her diary reflections of her pregnancy, childbirth and the subsequent death of her child from sudden infant death syndrome form the backbone of the story. This diary will be the starting point and a source of counterpoints from which to probe the feelings and expectations of the two main characters.
The script is chronological and factual and will be supplemented by brief interviews with people who know the women well. Brief testimonies from women in the developing world will be aired. Different kinds of visual materials will be used, including interviews, journalistic reports, clinical, and film creating a rhythmical unity throughout the drama.
This television drama is conceived as a "document with a big heart, in fact, a double heartbeat, that of a mother with a child."
Production of "Birth of a Mother" will commence in November.
TEENS - FACE TO FACE: Swedish Television Drama
Kattis Ahlstrom, UN Population Fund Goodwill Ambassador and Face to Face Campaign Spokesperson for Sweden and Hanne Fokdal Barnekow, Face to Face Campaign Spokesperson for Denmark begin production in November on a Campaign television documentary, "Teens - Face to Face."
The documentary portrays the daily lives of two teenage girls from different parts of the world, one from Sweden and one from Zambia. These teenagers are seen describing their ideas, attitudes and fantasies. These girls have never actually met each other except as they are juxtaposed in this film.
"Teens - Face to Face" shows these fifteen-year-old girls revealing personal thoughts about their sexuality and bodies, speaking at length about sex, AIDS and pregnancy. Each talks about her school and educational experiences, and what she wants to do in the future. The girls hypothesize about how to spend an unexpected $100. They reflect on the political events of the day as reported in their local newspaper. Each girl discusses the use of alcohol and drugs and the impact of these substances on her life. These teenagers share their experiences with death and dying in their immediate family and among friends.
"Teens - Face to Face" is very explicit in showing the cultural and economic backgrounds of these teenage girls, and the similarities and differences these backgrounds create in their daily lives. The knowledge these girls have and their attitudes toward sexual and reproductive health matters are aptly highlighted.
