Fundraising: Face to Face

This issue of the Face to Face Update shows how three Campaign Partners are using the Face to Face Campaign to raise funds for their respective organizations.

The objective of the Face to Face Campaign is to raise public awareness of and public and private financial support for the hundreds of millions of women in the world who are denied their basic rights, including:

* The right to basic family planning, sexual education and reproductive health care
* The right to freedom from domestic and war violence, including rape
* The right to information and education
* The right to equality and freedom from gender discrimination
* The right to employment opportunities and equity
* The right to equal representation

Face to Face Campaign messages are developed and promoted largely by Face to Face Campaign Partners on a country-by-country basis. All of these Campaign Partners have or will receive grants from Face to Face International, Inc. to execute Face to Face Campaign public awareness programs. In many cases, however, this grant money isn't enough to cover the total ongoing cost of Face to Face campaigning. To mobilize additional resources, Face to Face Campaign Partners are implementing advocacy fundraising initiatives as part of their Face to Face Campaign programming.

Face to Face: RUSSIA

Moscow, May 24, 2000. The first of two press conferences announcing the launch of the Face to Face Campaign in Russia was held today. Five organizations will partner to champion the needs and rights of women in Russia under the umbrella of the Face to Face Campaign: Face to Face International (the new Face to Face Campaign administrative organization), UNFPA, IPPF European Region, the Russian Family Planning Association and the All-Russian Public Organization - Miss Russia.

The All-Russian Public Organization - Miss Russia was created and registered by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation to contribute to the development and promotion of a healthy way of life. To this end, the All-Russian Public Organization - Miss Russia organizes and promotes national beauty contests that involve over 30,000 young women each year. The organization also sponsors the young talented artists representing Russia at the World Championships of Performing Arts. The All-Russian Public Organization - Miss Russia has a strong regional structure which numbers 52 subjects of the Russian Federation and will dedicate a representative in each region to help coordinate Face to Face Campaign media activities and educational programming.

Miss Russia herself will be joined by other national celebrities to help bring media and public attention to women's needs and issues in what remains by far the largest country in the world.

The Federacion de Planificacion Familiar de Espana Face to Face Information Kit

The Federacion de Planificacion Familiar de Espana (FPFE) is undertaking an extensive public awareness campaign to educate the Spanish public and promote the Face to Face Campaign and its issues.

The main tool used by FPFE is a "F2F Information Kit." The Information Kit contains brochures, posters, a monthly bulletin, and fact sheets about Campaign Donors, Partners, and Ambassadors. The beauty of the Information Kit is that it has multiple uses as material for individual or organizational mailings, interviews by radio and television journalists, and literature packages for meetings and conferences.

FPFE has targeted six groups as recipients of the Information Kit and other Face to Face Campaign activities: government agencies, parliaments, media, development NGOs, education systems, and health and family planning agencies.

Fundraising meetings using the Information Kit were held with five government agencies and nine privately owned companies. FPFE was successful in obtaining money for its Face to Face Campaign from the British Council, Antonio Nebrija University, Sabadell Corporation Bank and the Women's Institute.

FPFE has canvassed widely among mass media groups in Spain, using its Information Kits. FPFE contacted 7 newspapers, 15 magazines, 13 radio stations and 13 television stations. From this effort has come the identification of a group of journalists interested in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Opinion articles have been published in many different newspapers. Several radio and television stations regularly request interviews on Campaign-related topics.

In April 2000, TVE 1 will be airing a daily program, "La aventura del saber" dedicated specifically to the Face to Face Campaign.

Widespread support for the Face to Face Campaign has also come from intensive meetings FPFE has held with members of political groups in national and regional parliaments, regional Women's Policy Departments, regional Development Policy Departments, local Social Affairs Policy Departments, UNESCO's Gender Department and the United Nations Information Office in Madrid.

Finally, FPFE has shared its Information Kit with non-governmental development organizations acting at the regional and national levels, particularly those specializing in women's and healthcare programs.

Population Concern "Diary" Advertisement

The "Diary" ad was part of Population Concern's Edinburgh Campaign. The Campaign included meetings with local parliamentarians and other VIPs and decision-makers, exhibitions and other special events, and advertisements. The ads appeared in The Scotsman, the daily morning paper of Edinburgh, and the Evening News, the daily evening paper of Edinburgh, over a two-week period around Valentine's Day 2000. The ads raised about five times the cost of the ad production and insertion. The "Diary" ad is an adaptation of the immensely popular and often imitated Population Concern "Aishia and Joanne" poster.
