Creating income opps for low-income women
"By 2006, after eight years of working to mobilize UNFPA donor-country resources for SRH and service organizations as director of Face to Face, I came to the conclusion that if more poor women could pay for reproductive healthcare, they could help support family planning clinics [and other of their most basic needs] versus the clinics depending solely on public and private funding to stay in business. A fairly obvious conclusion, but one that still hasn’t witnessed much progress, especially in poor countries.
So in 2006, I and several business associates decided to dedicate our time and resources (like 2nd and 3rd home mortgages) to the development of small business models that could be easily replicated, community-by-community by women with little in the way of capital, education and/or technical expertise. Businesses that produced products commonly sold and used in poor and middle income communities within large urban areas. Products that usually end up being imported into the community, extracting wealth from the community versus creating it.
Now, after four years of product research and development, test marketing and initial sales traction, the company Options for Life with its optionsforlife product line and related small-business ownership opportunities is ready to enter developing country markets.
I invite you to visit the company on the Internet at www.optionsforlife.net
The products are not sold through "big box" retailers though we have been invited many times to do so. The products are meant to be sold by individuals and organization direct to end users – household and commercial users – somewhat like AVON products. The difference in our case (and it’s a very big difference) is that optionsforlife product distributors can work their way up to owning and operating their own Mini-plants, small but efficient blending and bottling operations that can produce hundreds of units an hour and realize sustainable revenues of over $4 million in just a few years."
