39 Things You Can Do


The suggestions below appear in a progression from things that are easy to do to things that are more involved or time-consuming.

Learn More about Women, Population and Development Issues

1. Search the Internet (or your library) for international women, population and development issues and organizations (international and local).
2. Contact local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to learn how the issues affect you, your community and your country.
3. Ask NGOs for a list of Web sites, books, tapes and movies on the topics.
4. Request to be placed on the NGO(s) mailing list.

Disseminate Information

5. Post notices on school, community and workplace Internet and other public bulletin boards linking to this list of "50 Things To Do".
6. Participate in issue-related on-line forums and blogs.
7. E-mail issue-related information to family, friends and associates along with a personal letter.
8. Link to the Face to Face Web site from your personal or your business Web site and suggest others to do the same.
9. Encourage people to volunteer their services.

Interest Your Family, Friends and Associates in Women, Population and Development Issues

10. Have small group meetings in your home to discuss issues.
11. Discuss the issues at meetings you attend.
12. Stimulate others in the groups to recruit volunteers.

Arrange Locations for Group Meetings

13. Obtain free or inexpensive meeting space from civic organizations, clubs, churches, schools and others.
14. Ask schools, colleges and universities to have debates and discussion groups.
15. Contact public libraries and book stores to host group discussions of books dealing with the issues.
16. Create or host on-line forums and blogs

Find Speakers for Group Meetings

17. Form discussion groups made up of interested persons who are not specialists in women, population and development matters, but use informed moderators.
18. For larger meetings, get speakers from local NGOs.
19. Meet with academicians and scientists to gain their authoritative support on issue positions and ask those most interested to become speakers.
20. Encourage ministers to give sermons related to local and international women, population and development matters by offering them information and suggested themes provided by NGOs.
21. For conventions dealing with public issues, recommend speakers provided by NGOs, et al.

Obtain Print and Broadcast Exposure for Women, Population and Development Issues

22. Write position letters to editors of print and Internet-based newspapers and magazines.
23. Invite editors, journalists and other writers to group discussions.
24. Call in to hosts/producers of radio and TV talk shows.

Inform Your Legislative Representatives

25. Contact local NGO(s) to find out about pending or desirable issue-related legislation. 26. Let your representatives know how you feel about the issues and pending or desirable legislation. (Your representative is easy to find with an Internet search.)
27. Support candidates who support your position on the issues, organizations and programming.

Contact Highly Receptive Organizations

28. Contact women's civic, religious, and political groups and make sure they are informed on international women, population and development issues.
29. Ask to be included in key meetings of these groups.
30. Reach out to environmental organizations and show them how environmental and population and development issues are closely connected.
31. Organize joint events with environmentalists.
32. Encourage schools to include women, population and development issues in environmental and other curricula.
33. Lend active support to conservation programs, including reduction of wasteful consumption.
34. Inform and work with human rights activists on women’s rights abuses.
35. Inform all of the successes of micro-enterprise lending in attaining economic independence and self respect.

Generate Donations to Women, Population and Development Organizations

36. Offer financial support (donations) to local and international women, population and development NGOs and multi-lateral organizations (like UNFPA).
37. Approach others for donations and persuade them to solicit contributions from their friends and associates.

Volunteer Your Time and Talent

38. Sign up to be a Face to Face Volunteer. We will assign you to a task or project suited to your interests and talent.
